The reading of American Citizens Abroad book, So Far and Yet So Near, held at Payot Bookstore in Geneva on October 12th was a great success.

Payot graciously provided hors d'œuvres and beverages while local literary fans, friends and family listened to the authors read. Authors Lynne Therese Gilardi "On Foreign Soil", Mavis Guinard "Sailing from War to Peace", Katie Hayoz "Finding Home", Cris Karmas "The Dog Will Never Bring You Tea", Laura Mancini Chan "An American Experience in Berlin", Jon McLin "The Return of the Expatriate Piano", and Susan Tiberghien "Seeking a Hearth and Finding a Home", all read excerpts from the book. The authors came from far and wide to participate; Geneva, Paris, London and even from Iowa! A heartfelt thank you to all the authors, Payot staff and ACA volunteers who made this event possible.

What is it like for an American to live abroad on a long-term basis? How does it happen? What is fun and what is difficult about integrating into the local culture? Do you have to do so? What happens to your sense of national identity? How do children view the experience? What is the impact on family life and on relations with friends and relatives in the States? What about the reverse culture shock when you return home?

This collection of stories is based on experiences that have been lived by Americans all over the world. Some of them are funny, some are sad. Some cover a lifetime, while some recount an experience that lasted a few hours. But they all convey the flavor of living abroad, its rewards and difficulties, and the impact on one's sense of what it means to be an American.

If you have ever dreamed about living overseas, this book will give you insight into what that can really mean. If you have ever lived overseas, you will share the joys and frustations that are all too familiar. If you want to learn more about Americans who are truly ambassadors to the world or if you want to enjoy a good read and great stories, then you shouldn't miss So Far and Yet So Near, a book compiled, edited and published by American Cititzens Abroad ACA.
