Personal stories

Australian Expats: stories from abroad is a compendium of stories culled from Australians who have moved abroad to live or work in a foreign country. What sets this book apart from many travel experience books is the very personal nature of the stories. These stories do not just tell about the quaint differences between cultures and, the often times frustrating or amusing complications of living in a foreign country, instead many of the tales tell of how people changed personally and emotionally as a result of the experience of living abroad. The stories recount not only the joys and frustrations of the expat experience, but they also tell how these "displaced" Australians feel about their relationship to their country, their families and friends they left behind.

Quotes

"Ngilozi, this vegemite is terrible!" wrote Gabrielle Brabander in her story.

"Living in Swaziland has challenged my beliefs and ideas about Australia."

"Being an Australian here brings mixed feelings and raises more questions than it answers."

An invaluable guide

This book is an invaluable guide for anyone thinking of moving abroad as it dispels some of the myths that the expatriate experience is all about "easy living and jet setting". From the 20 year-old woman who left Canberra to become a Benedictine nun in England to the young women who found herself living the New York experience through 9/11, these tales tell you about the "unexpected" parts of the expat experience. For anyone who has lived abroad this book this will remind them of their experiences abroad. Many of the stories will be friendly reminders of your own personal moments and the emotions you felt while living and working in a foreign country. Australian Expats: stories from abroad; is entertaining, educating and insightful, a must read for everyone.
