ACA suggests you encourage your Congressman to join the Americans Abroad Caucus. The model below will help you. Of course, you may want to personalize the first paragraph according to your own situation.

Representative _______                               Date:
______________ House Office Building
Washington DC 20515

Dear Representative _______,

Having lived/last voted in __________________, I am one of your constituents, and I vote in US elections by absentee ballot even though I now live in ______________. I appreciate your work in Congress, and I know that you work hard for all of your constituents, no matter where they live.

I am writing to ask you to consider joining the Americans Abroad Caucus in Congress. This is a bipartisan group of representatives who share an interest in issues that are important to the estimated 4.7 million overseas Americans. Collectively, we are as large as the entire state of Colorado, and in fact larger than about 14 states of the US. The issues of concern to us include citizenship, voting, Medicare, social security, and taxation, among others.

(Optional) Speaking for myself, the issue that is of most importance to me is _____________.

The caucus now includes the following members, from both parties:
Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Joe Wilson (R-SC), Co-Chairs
John Boozman (R-AR)
Steve Cohen (D-TN)
Tom Davis (R-VA)
Alcee Hastings (D-FL)
Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX)
Henry Waxman (D-CA)
Michael Capuano (D-MA)
Donna Christensen (D-VI)
Susan Davis (D-CA)
Kay Granger (R-TX)
Michael Honda (D-CA)
Chris Van Hollen (D-MD)
Frank Wolf (R-VA)

Through the work of members of this caucus and the increased interest they bring to issues which affect us overseas, I hope that Congress can address specific problems which face all of us voting, taxpaying Americans who do not live in the United States.

Some children of US citizens born overseas have no right to US nationality, and some are even born stateless. Our absebtee ballot votes from overseas are often not counted. We lack access to Medicare, and we have problems getting social security payments. And even though we live and work abroad, we must pay taxes to the United States, unlike the citizens of every other country in the world who only pay taxes to their country of residence and work, not that of their origin.

I encourage you to join this caucus to show your support for the millions of US citizens living overseas, many of whom, like me, vote in your district. You can leanr more about the caucus by contacting Jennifer Keaton with Representative Maloney at 225-7944 or Paul Callahan with Representative Wilson at 225-2452. You and your staff can also learn about the positive contributions that we overseas American can make to the image and the economy of the USA during Overseas Americans Week held in Washington DC in the spring every year.

Thank you in advance, and most sincerely,
